Riana van Niekerk wins Loskop

Photo: Allie van NiekerkRiana van Niekerk of the Mr. Price Club won the Loskop 50km Ultramarathon in 3:22:05 on Saturday 21 April 2007, and as the ultra’s 2006 defending champion, became the first woman ever to successfully defend her title in the history of the race.

Riana has been showing good form in the season, including a third place at the SA Marathon Championships in February in a personal best time of 2:43:00, aside from 1st places in the Petro SA marathon (2:49:33), and the Om die Dam 50km (in a very fast time of 3:22:39).

Last year Riana won the Wally Hayward Marathon, the Bergville Ladysmith Ultra, the Pretoria Marathon and Loskop Marathon, and the year’s highlight of winning a gold medal in the Comrades Marathon by finishing 8th.

The Loskop Marathon between Middelburg and Loskopdam is one of the richest and biggest races in the country, with 4000 runner competing in the 50km event with a strong showing of Africa’s top athletes competing in the race.

Riana used this race as training for the Comrades Marathon. Riana has been in the top ten twice before, and hopes to do well again this year.
