Team South Africa has retained the African Championship title after stellar performances in Bambous, Mauritius, where South Africa raked in a total of 27 medals (10-12-5).
Attended by 47 nations, the champs were marred by strong winds off the Indian Ocean which affected results in all disciplines, though South African athletes revelled in the conditions to post a strong showing.
As the championships ended yesterday and the spoils were tallied, South Africa had gained 27 metals, including 10 gold medals, with Janet Wienand winning the 400m hurdles in 56.97s, and the women’s 4x400m clocking in with a winning 3:36:88m.
South Africa’s top female sprinter Geraldine Pillay gained a silver in each of the 100 and 200m events, coming second to Ghana’s Vida Anim.
