World champion, Ruth Chepngetich, smashed the Nagoya Women’s Marathon course record in a time of 2:17:18 on Sunday, 13 March 2022, in Tokyo, Japan.

Running with the pacemakers, Chepngetich had formed part of the lead group that passed the 5km line in 16:34, joined by Ando Yuka, Salpeter Chemtai Lonah and Hosoda Ai.

The race later became a two-woman battle between Chepngetich and Lonah after the 30km mark.

However, Chepngetich made a decisive uphill surge with around 8km remaining, running strongly all the way to break the course record and claim top spot on the podium.

2020 Tokyo Marathon winner, Lonah secured second place in 2:18:45, while Japan’s Yuka rounded up the top three with bronze in 2:22:22.
