SA Cause Hong Kong Upset

 

Seeded 13th, South Africa, having lost 0-3 to Hong Kong and Malaysia, the respective 4th and 5th seeds, caused a minor upset in Pool D when they narrowly beat Netherlands, the 12th seeds, 2-1 in Hong Kong. 

 

Milnay Louw gave South Africa a 1-0 lead when she accounted for Milou van der Heijden 9-4 9-5 8-10 9-3, but Ilona Lagerweij levelled matters for the Netherlands by defeating Lizane Vlok 9-5 9-6 9-4.

Melissa Meulenbelt swept through the first game without dropping a point against Cheyna Tucker, before the South African overcame her nerves to win the second game 9-7.

 

Then gaining in confidence, she edged through the next two games 9-7 9-6 to give South Africa a 2-1 victory.

 

Having finished 3rd in the pool, South Africa will now meet 15th seeded Japan in the 9-16 play-offs.
