South Africa’s top gymnasts departed for the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games on Thursday, 21 July 2022.
The spectacle which is set to take place in Birmingham between 28 July and 8 August, will see Team South Africa for the first time in many years feature a full Women’s Artistic team.
Donovan Jurgens, President of Gymnastics South Africa stated in the official media release: “It’s every athlete’s dream to represent their country on the international stage and we are incredibly proud of our gymnasts, and we wish them all the best in Birmingham.”
Ilse Pelser, Team Manager and Head Coach for WAG stated: “It’s a major achievement to qualify for the Commonwealth Games and we’re looking forward to the team’s performance in Birmingham. It is encouraging the see the growth of Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.
“Earlier this month the team delivered an amazing performance at the 16th African Championships Artistic Gymnastics. Caitlin claimed top honours and for the first time in eight years a South African gymnast was crowned the WAG senior All Around Champion. Caitlin won gold in uneven bars, while Naveen secured the bronze medal.
“Caitlin and Naveen also went on to win the bronze medal in the beam and vault competitions respectively with Garcell Napier securing the bronze medal on floor. We look forward to a clean competition in Birmingham and building on the success of this team,” Pelser concluded.
The 2022 Commonwealth Games kicks off on 28 July, with the Artistic Gymnastics competition starting on 29 July. The Rhythmic Gymnastics competition will take place from 4 August.
