African Hockey is hosting its inaugural African Qualifier for Hockey5s in December in Ismailia in Egypt.
This is ahead of the inaugural FIH Hockey5s World Cup which takes place in January 2024 in Oman with three African teams qualifying for the 16-team event.
South Africa’s women side will take on the hosts Egypt, Namibia, Kenya and Zambia with the top 3 qualifying for the FIH Hockey5s World Cup.
The South African team has had a small taste of senior international Hockey5s having competed in the FIH Hockey5s event in Lausanne where they finished third of the five teams competing.
South Africa open their campaign against Zambia on Saturday, 10 December before they take face both Namibia and Kenya on the 11th. The tournament then has a rest day before completing the pool stages against Egypt. The playoff games will be on Thursday, 15 December, with the 3rd place-playoff deciding the final spot for the African team.
The South African team recently conducted a selection camp at Hoerskool Linden and the team selected features five players from the Lausanne Event while a further five players will earn their first Hockey5s cap for the country. Angela Wellham, Germerie Spershott, Grace Cochrane, Izelle Cilliers and Teshawn De Le Ray will all be hoping to make a debut in coach Tsoanelo Pholo’s side.
