The South African Women’s Indoor Hockey team sealed a tight 3-2 win over Namibia to go unbeaten in the pool stage of the Kathea Nkosi Cup at the Wynberg Military base on Monday, 18 December 2023.

Having worked so hard for this result, South Africa will be hoping they can cross the final hurdle as they take on Namibia in Tuesday’s Kathea Nkosi Cup final, in Cape Town.

It was a slow start to Monday night’s match, with the first goal was only scored towards the end of the second quarter, in the 19th minute of the game.

Teagan Fourie netted the first goal for South Africa, shortly before halftime. Her stroke was awarded after Namibia goalkeeper Petro Stoffberg missed-timed a challenge to take out Bonolo Moabi.

South Africa then doubled their lead in the third quarter through match MVP Kayla de Waal, before Malikah Hamza made it 3-0 from a penalty corner, and the hosts looked to be heading for a comfortable victory with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

African champs Namibia were of no such mind, and provided late drama aplenty as none other than Kiana Cormack scored two quick goals for Namibia, leaving the score at 3-2 with the clock ticking down.

Despite the intense pressure, hosts South Africa held their nerve to secure the victory, and will face the same opponents in Tuesday evening’s final, at 6:45 pm.

Namibia vs Ireland

In the day’s earlier match, Ireland failed in their final attempt to to secure a win during the tournament, losing 2-1 to Namibia in their final tie in Cape Town. The current African Champions Namibia were gunning for a win to secure their place in today’s final.

Ireland posed an early challenge to the Namibians as Lilly Lloyd opened the scoring after she picked up a rebound ball and put it in the back of the net.

But Namibia was back on level terms as top goal-scorer Kiana Cormack got a goal in the 15th minute, via a penalty stroke.

The game was going at a frenetic pace but neither team could be separated. However, being the player she is, Cormack scored her second goal to extend her team’s narrow lead, and that was enough to see Namibia take the win.
