The SPAR South Africa Women’s Hockey Team tackle Japan in their final pool-stage match, and coach Jenny King must be wondering how a slightly different result in one game might have made a world of difference.
A win against Argentina, then very likely for the majority of the second half, or a better performance against the USA or Korea, might have seen SA with an opportunity to progress.
Perhaps better familiarity with the nature of international competition would have seen them progress to a top spot in this year’s exhilarating tournament.
SA are bottom of Pool B’s log, and today’s match against Japan will the team’s final opportunity to determine an advantageous position in the final play-offs.
Either way, SA will face a similarly disappointed side from the bottom of Pool A on Friday, with India nor China being able to record a win in their championship matches to date.
SA’s earlier competitors Argentina and Australia join the Netherlands as definite teams to contest the semi-finals, with any of Spain, England and Germany fighting for the final berth.
