Simmonds and Montjane Represent SA at Spring Open Finals

The South African challenge is still well on track in the SA Spring Open at Ellis Park, with Chanel Simmonds and Kgothatso Montjane through to the finals that will take place today, Sunday, 29 September.

Simmonds, the top seed was relieved to come through her women’s singles semi-final match on Saturday, beating Maria Viviani from Italy 6-3 7-5. The 26-year-old will meet Australian eighth-seeded Tina Smith in today’s final.

In the wheelchair tennis event, US Open doubles finalist Kgothatso Montjane continued her dominance edging out Busra Un from Turkey in straight sets 6-1 6-0 to set up a final clash against Japanese second seed Shiori Funamuzi. The Japanese defeated Emmanuelle Morch of France.

8-Tina Smith (AUS) bt 2-Merel Hoedt (NED) 6-3 6-0

Wheelchair Tennis:
1-Kgothatso Montjane (RSA) bt 4-Busra Un (TUR) 6-1 6-0
2-Shiori Funamizu (JPN) bt 3-Emmanuelle Morch (FRA) 6-3 6-4

1-Chanel Simmonds (RSA) vs 8-Tina Smith (Aus)

Wheelchair Tennis:
1-Kgothatso Montjane (RSA) vs 2-Shiori Funamuzi (JPN)

The finals of the SA Spring Open will commence from 9am on Sunday on SuperSport 11.
