The South African senior hockey team have progressed to the semi-final of the Africa Cup of Nations after registering a second clean sheet of the tournament over Namibia on Tuesday, 18 January 2022.

Tarryn Lombard scored a brace for the defending champions, while Lilian du Plessis, Stephanie Botha, Tegan Fourie and Nomnikelo Veto added a goal each.

In the first period, it was clear that South Africa’s offence would play aggressively and up-tempo as they pushed into Namibia’s territory.

The South Africans broke through their opponents defence for the first goal when du Plessis scored the opener in the 9th minute. They took three more shots on goal but were unable to score in the final period.

In the second quarter, they took control of the game scoring two more goals to break open a 3-0 lead before halftime.

In another show of class and dominance, Fourie and Lombard found the back of the net in the 3rd quarter.

Namibia’s defence toughened in the final quarter, limiting South Africa to just one goal through a Nomnikelo Veto netter.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe quickly dusted off from their 3-0 defeat to South Africa as they thumped Uganda 5-0.

Natalie Terblanche scored a brace, while Tino Elijah, Nicolle Grant and Lilian Pope added a goal each.

Nigeria won their first game of the competition after a 2-1 victory over Zambia.

On Wednesday, Zambia play host to Kenya, while the other teams enjoy their rest day.

Full action will resume on Thursday with exciting encounters as the group stage of the competition concludes.
