South Africa aims to secure an unassailable 2-0 series lead against New Zealand in the second ODI at Pietermaritzburg tomorrow. In the inaugural ODI in Potchefstroom, the Proteas Women triumphed over New Zealand, chasing down 236 with four wickets in hand and 17 balls to spare.
Noteworthy was the team’s resilience in batting; despite an initial stumble, a sixth-wicket century partnership between Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk put the chase back on track. Captain Laura Wolvaardt laid the foundation with a crucial half-century.
Player of the Match, Nadine de Klerk, exhibited an outstanding all-around performance, also claiming 2/34 in nine overs.
Masabata Klaas was pivotal, securing three crucial wickets. South Africa will be focused on enhancing their fielding and maintaining pressure on New Zealand, who, no doubt, regarded their total as competitive.
Speaking to the media ahead of the second game, Klaas reflected on her good performance in the opening game: “The working behind closed doors has helped me and of course listening to the bowling coach and sticking to the plans, what to do and when to do it.”
The final ODI is scheduled at Kingsmead on Sunday, 1 October, coinciding with the Proteas Women’s #BlackDay initiative aimed at combatting gender-based violence.
