SA Hockey has unveiled the 18-player squad that will represent South Africa at the upcoming FIH Junior Women’s World Cup 2023 in Santiago, Chile. 

Ranked 8th in the FIH Junior Rankings, the young South Africans are ready to create waves as they find themselves pitted against defending champions Netherlands, hosts Chile, and long-standing rivals Australia in Pool B.

What makes this South African squad particularly intriguing is the blend of youthful talent and seasoned experience. Several players, including Taheera Augousti, Kayla Swarts, and Ntsopa Mokoena, have already earned senior caps, infusing the team with a winning mindset. 

Furthermore, Cerian Fourie, Daniella de Oliveira (Indoor Hockey), and Rea Phume (Hockey 5s) bring a wealth of experience from the senior international stage, making them invaluable guides for the team’s progress in this high-pressure competition.

Addressing the media, Coach Marais emphasised the team’s dedication and the challenging selection process: “The players have worked hard and made the selection process incredibly difficult.” This recognition of the squad’s effort and determination adds an extra layer of motivation as they prepare to take on global powerhouses.

South Africa’s consistent qualification for the tournament for the 8th consecutive time, courtesy of their triumph at the Junior African Cup, highlights the nation’s growing prowess in the international hockey scene. With this upcoming challenge, the team aims to make their mark on the global stage, with a passionate belief in their ability to make South Africa proud.

As the underdogs, South Africa’s squad has an opportunity to rewrite the narrative and surprise their formidable opponents.
