Johannesburg – 26 October 2006 : Athletics South Africa has issued an urgent reminder that runners have few days left to enter the 2006 Nedbank Soweto Marathon with entries closing on Friday 27 October 2006.
It will be the 15th running of South Africa’s most popular township road race and this year the Soweto Marathon is going to rock.
Sport will merge with entertainment as ASA, together with Nedbank, are pulling out all the stops to ensure a truly memorable occasion.
A versatile programme of entertainment has been lined up for the flagship event of the Nedbank City Marathon Series, the likes of which has never been experienced at a road running event in South Africa.
Activities commence at 05h00 with warm-up aerobics prior to the start, line- and box-dancing (featuring the Codesa dance) in which runners will be encouraged to participate with a programme of specially-selected and inspiring range of music.
Fireworks and confetti will mark the simultaneous but separate starts of the marathon and 10km races, with Johannesburg Mayor Amos Masondo firing the gun to officially send off the marathon runners and Baby Jake Matlala the celebrity starter for the 10km.
Over 1000 athletic club volunteers will be stationed along the 42,2km, 20km, 10km and 5km routes to ensure the safety and comfort of runners, deployed either as marshals or refreshment station personnel.
The routes will also be lined with the legendary Soweto Marathon supporters – the people of Soweto who so warmly embrace this event.
On-route entertainment has been laid on to inspire the runners, at each of the 9 historical points – from marimba dancers to bag pipes, drummers (congo, metallic and rhythmic), brass bands, gumboot and ethnic dancers. Runners will hardly have time to reflect on weary muscles.
The finish at Elkah Stadium will feature big name entertainment – Kabelo, Alaska, DG Bongs and an array of supporting artists, as well as marimba bands. They will be there however to welcome the biggest stars of the day – the anticipated 10,500 finishers.
Runners are urged to submit their entries by no later than Friday 27 October.
Entry forms are available through athletic clubs, leading sports shops, gyms, as well as from the enquiries counter at any branch of Nedbank.
