Despite a sensational half century from Suné Luus, Pakistan edged out South Africa by 13 runs in the second T20I, levelling the series 1-all at the Multan Cricket Stadium in Pakistan on Wednesday, 18 September, 2024.
Proteas Women’s captain Laura Wolvaardt won the toss and opted to bowl first. Muneeba Ali led the charge with a blistering 45, setting the stage for a formidable total of 181/4 in 20 overs by the home team.
Gull Feroza struggled at the top, contributing just 10 runs, but the middle order picked up the pace. Nida Dar (29) and Sidra Amin (28) made valuable contributions, respectively, before Fatima Sana’s explosive unbeaten effort of (37*) propelled the score further.
Aliya Riaz’s unbeaten quick-fire (17*) showcased the team’s depth, leaving South Africa with a challenging target.
In the absence of Marizanne Kapp, Tumi Sekhukhune was the pick of the Proteas bowling attack with 2/30, whilst Suné Luus and Annerie Dercksen took a wicket each.
In response, South Africa’s chase started on a shaky note, losing the early wicket of Tazmin Brits (9), and while Laura Wolvaardt provided an invaluable (36), it was Luus who provided a glimmer of hope with a stellar unbeaten (53*).
Luus became just the third Proteas player to score 1000 runs and take 50 wickets in T20I cricket. Despite her efforts alongside the hard-hitting Chloe Tryon, who remained not-out on (30*), South Africa fell 13 runs short, finishing at 164/6 in their 20 overs.
Nashra Sandhu was the standout bowler for Pakistan in her four overs with 2/20, while Sadia Iqbal provided valuable support with her figures of 2/27, stifling the South African innings effectively.
This victory not only levels the T20I series but also sets the stage for a thrilling decider, where fans can look forward to an electrifying conclusion to the series on Friday 20 September with the match starting at 07h00 (SAST) and will be live on SuperSport.
