Anneke Bosch’s career best figures of 65* (63) with seven fours helped the Proteas Women seal a dominant 8-wicket victory in the second ODI against Bangladesh in Potchefstroom on Wednesday 20 December, 2023.
South Africa had their backs to the wall on a scorcher of an afternoon after losing the opening encounter in East London by 119 runs, and sparkling home efforts in each innings combined to level the series 1-all with one game remaining in the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-2025 series.
Bangladesh were put in to bat after losing the toss. The opening pair of Shamima Sultana 28 (36) and Fargana Hoque put on a solid first wicket partnership of 48 runs, before Masabata Klaas broke deadlock in the 13th over.
Murshida Sultana was sent back to the dressing room a short while later for 8 (13) off the bowling of Marizanne Kapp, who entered the elite group of players for achieving 150 ODI wickets. Kapp is only the second Proteas Women player to the achieve the feat.
Hoque and Fahima Khatun put on a compelling 93-run stand for the fourth wicket, which saw the visitors over the 200 mark. Hoque played a brilliant 102 (167) before she was run out by Tazmin Brits. Khatun was unbeaten on 46* (48), with Shorna Akter 6* (3) as the Tigresses amassed a score of 222/4 in their allotted overs.
Kapp finished with figures of 2/21 and Klass contributed with 1/50 as the Proteas restricted the visitors.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt and Tasmin Brits got off to a firm start, by seeing the powerplay through. They brought up a 50-run stand for the first wicket in the 12th over. Wolvaardt reached her 31 ODI fifty before Brits scored her maiden ODI half-century, propelling the opening wicket stand to triple figures.
Ritu Moni caused an upset when she dismissed Brits for a well-played 50 (84) at the end of the 25th over, and then disaster struck on the very first ball of the next over, when Brits’ opening partner Wolvaardt was bowled by Fahima Khatun for 54 (67).
Suné Luus and Anneke Bosch took up their assignment and executed their game plan particularly well. Bosch – who was named Player of the Match – capitalised on the platform laid by Wolvaardt and Brits to put on a 117-run partnership with Luus.
Pacing themselves perfectly, Bosch racing to an unbeaten 65* (63) to surpass her previous best score for South Africa, and added with a solid unbeaten contribution from Luus 47* (57), the pair chased down Bangladesh’s score of 222/4 to secure the all-important victory with 29 balls to spare.
It is all to play for in the third and final ODI taking place on Saturday at Willowmoore Park in Benoni, with play starting at 14h00. Tickets are available on TicketPro and at the ground from R20.
