Day 11 at the All Africa Games in Algeria, North Africa, faired less well for Team South Africa, with a total of 12 Medals including two Gold on Sunday, with Saturday bringing in a better 24 Medals, including 8 Gold.
Monday is also the final day of the All Africa Games, and with only the Men’s Football Final scheduled (in which South Africa isn’t competing), the total medal count for Team SA s 62 gold, 58 silver, and 53 bronze.
Medals won on Saturday include Adriana Geyser’s Gold in Rowing, while comrades Alexandra White and Catherine Shaw combined for a second Gold in the women’s rowing department. Shaw achieved a Silver medal of her own too, while Nomthandazo Sibiya added another with Hayley Jo Arthur.
In Gymnastics, Ursula Botha used the Women’s bar to bring in another Gold for Team SA, while Natia van Heerden followed her for a Silver medal. Celeste Visagie also earned Silver in the women’s vault, while Jenine Ellappen (Silver) and Watu Kobese (Bronze) brought in acclaim for the Chess team.
More Gold medals on Saturday by Janice Josephs (Long Jump) and Elizna Naude (Discus) added to the pile, while the up-and-coming Simone du Toit earned a Silver in the women’s Shot Put, and Veronica Abrahamse earned Bronze behind her.
Tihana Voster teamed up for a Silver in the women’s 4x400m relay with Estie Whittstock, Amanda Khotse and Tsholofelo Selemela, Celeste Visagie (Parallel Bars) took another Silver for South Africa.
Long outstaying their men counterparts, the senior women’s soccer team Banyana Banyana lost 4-0 to African Champs Nigeria in the soccer final in Algiers, for a Silver medal.
In the words of Team SA Media Manager Bilaal Hoosein, “We end the Games in third place behind Egypt (74 gold) and Algeria (70), while Algeria leads the overall medals tally with 204. The athletes start departing for home today. Most of them are exhausted and tired of boxed food, so can’t wait to get back to home soil.”
