Simonay Weitsz and Maria Karabo Mailula won two of two gold medals that were up for grabs on Sunday as South African athletes scooped an array of medals at the 23rd FISU World University Cross Country Championships in Muskat, Oman, from 17 – 18 February, 2024.
Facing stiff competition from Spain and Britain, #TeamSouthAfrica were not deterred from their game plan and the hard work that was put in coming into this competition.
In the women’s individual 3km short race, Simonay Weitsz ran a time of 09:14 to scoop gold, just 3 seconds ahead of Marta Serrana Azpiazu of Spain, who crossed the finish line on 09:17 for silver. Azpiazu was a mere second faster than Bethany Morley of Great Britain, who claimed bronze in a time of 09:18.

Maria Karabo Mailula clocked a time of 34:03 to win gold in the individual women’s 10km long race, well ahead of Team GB’s Alice Goodall, who claimed silver in a time of 34:18, and Haruka Ogawa of Japan, completing the podium finish when she crossed the line on 34:22.

In its debut hosting of a FISU event, Oman welcomed 23 nations to their shores for the championships.
Along with Team SA’s men, South Africa women scooped four podium finishes, with Mailula along with her teammates Phemelo Ntoe, Abednico Choba and Kirsti Erin Bell, winning bronze in the Long Mixed Relay on Saturday; and Weitsz and her team comprising Keanu Cameron Domingo, Sisanda Dumitsa and Christopher Liam Swart also won bronze, in the Short Mixed Relay.
