Team SA’s Latest Update from Para Athletics Champs

Day six of the Para Athletics Championships saw Sheryl James and Liezel Gouws from Team South Africa miss out on a podium finish in the 100m final on Thursday, 13 July 2023.

In other news, Team South Africa now look forward to the upcoming World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. The country has selected a strong team comprising divers, artistic swimmers, water polo players, and open water and pool swimmers.

However, preparation for the championships has not been easy, especially for the divers who have had to train during the country’s winter months.

Zalika Methula, one of the divers, spoke about the challenges they faced with training in the cold. Usually, they do not train in the pool during winter due to the low temperatures. However, in preparation for the world championships, they have been training in the water on weekends. This has proven to be tough as the cold weather affects their muscles and makes it more difficult to perform at their best. Despite these hardships, Methula remains positive and determined to represent her country.

In the women’s 3m synchronised diving event, Methula will be partnering with Bailey Heydra. This partnership is expected to bring excitement and fierce competition to the event.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Olufunke Gando is excitedly making her debut at the senior international level. Gando, who has recently turned 19, expressed her nerves as she gears up to face the best of the best from other countries. Playing against experienced athletes at such a young age is a dream come true for her. She is honoured and ready to take on the challenge.

The South African women’s water polo team has been grouped with Brazil, Greece, and Italy for the pool stage of the World Aquatics Championships. It will be an opportunity for them to showcase their skills and compete against top nations.

The full South African team for the World Aquatics Championships includes athletes in swimming, open water swimming, diving, artistic swimming, and water polo. They are determined to make their mark and bring glory to their nation.

As the championships draw near, excitement continues to grow among the athletes and supporters. Team South Africa is ready to compete at the highest level and show the world their talent and dedication.
