Telkom plays an important role in the development and growth of netball. It’s sponsorship of the Telkom Netball League (#TNL) and the Telkom National Championships (#TNC) is making an impact as stars are being unearthed throughout the netball pipeline as future national stars look to impress.
This year, Golden Fireballs beat Gauteng Jaguars to be crowned TNL Champions for 2022 as players looked to catch the eye of the national selectors ahead of World Cup year, and competition was stiff at the TNC where top schools led the way to show the future of netball is bright.

South Africa’s top stars have succeeding in the #TNL and going on to star on the world stage, for the national team, and for other global franchise teams. Phumza Maweni played her 100th game for the national team at the Africa Netball World Cup Qualifiers, Lenize Potgieter signed with Manchester Thunder recently and Karla Pretorius continues to star for Sunshine Coast Lightning.
Alongside these star names, other talented players have put in the hard yards and are excelling on court. Elmeré van der Berg, who recently signed a global franchise contract, is current leading goal scorer in the #TNL with 361 goals in Division 1 for North West Flames, and says its a privilege to be one of the top scorers.

Speaking on encouraging young girls, van der Berg kept it simple. “Never give up on your dreams and keep on working hard, because one day you will get awarded for putting in the hard work.”
And like any South African looking forward to the Netball World Cup next year to take place on home soil, she expressed her excitement.
“I am very excited for the World Cup and it will be an honour for me to be selected to play World Cup, but I will continue working hard”, van der Berg concluded.
Another player making strides on the netball court and outside is Momentum gsport Awards Style Star finalist, Tumi Mahloko, who plays for the reigning TNL Champions, Gauteng Golden Fireballs.
Mahloko is a champion player and this takes a lot of discipline and sacrifices on and off the field.
“It means waking up everyday and deciding to be consistent no matter how you feel,” Mahloko says.
Three things that keep her going:
-My mom.
-Changing my life for the better.
-For everyone that believes in me.
As the gsport Newsroom powered by Momentum in partnership with Telkom, continues to amplify women’s sport coverage and close the visibility gap, North West Flames captain Didintle Keebine believes that the media is on the right track.
“I believe the media is currently on the right track to amplify women’s sport. One of my biggest desires is to see women from disadvantaged areas receive recognition just as those from advantaged areas.”
Keebine who continues to make her mark advises young girls to believe in what they want, saying “I believe that if you really want something, you’ll find a way. If you don’t, you’ll find an excuse. You are going to have people who are going to tell you that you can’t do something, there will always be nay-sayers in life. You can’t let that get to you. You need to go out there and make something of yourself and prove them wrong.
“You can do anything you put your mind to, and when you have your mind set on something, there is literally nothing that can stop you. When you believe, anything is possible. Whatever it is you want to achieve, if you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk, if you can’t walk crawl. No matter what, keep moving forward, you will make it. Trust the process.”
