Top Stars Lead gsport Birthday Tributes

Banyana Banyana coach Vera Pauw has led the tributes to gsport4girls as the initiative celebrates its eighth birthday this August. “Happy Birthday to @gsport4girls!

“It’s now eight years of supporting opportunities for girls already. The gsport Awards are the only women’s sports awards in SA! Keep up this work, we all need you!”, Pauw said in a message to gsport.

Launched on 1 August 2006, gsport aims to raise the profile of women’s sport in South Africa to encourage Corporate South Africa to back our women athletes.

The online-based initiative publishes regular news on women’s sport at gsport.co.za and activates extensively across social media via its @gsport4girls profiles on twitter and facebook.

The highlight o the intiative is the yearly gsport Awards, the country’s only women’s sports awards, which recognises individuals who are contributing to the growth of South African women’s sport.

Melissa Reddy, former gsport Woman in Media winner: “Eight years in, eight years strong! Happy Birthday gsport, thanks for your support and promotion of women in sport. You are not just making a change, you ARE the change. Here’s to many more happy, inspiring, encouraging returns!”

Vanes-Mari du Toit, SA Netball Star: “Seeing that it’s my birthday the day after gsport, we’re technically twins! So here’s wishing a very happy birthday to my sister ;)”

Leading woman in media, Lebo Motsoeli, said: “Without gsport women in sport would still be in the dark. Let’s continue to showcase the talent that women in sport have, across Africa. Happy Birthday. Love always.”

Xoli Zondo, SABC Sport presenter search winner: “Eight years seem to have just flown past, happy 8th birthday gsports and I wish you more years as you continue to put women in the sports …fraternity on the podium. Your impact is great. Wishing Kass and her team all the strength, Congrats!!!”

Kate Nokwe, sports broadcaster, added: “Your incredible support for ALL women in sport is life changing. Every day you make us feel like we are part of something bigger. You change lives, one mention at a time. Never doubt you DO make a difference. Happy birthday gsport.”
