Tornados captain Christine Markgraaff (pictured here in a file photo) was delighted to lead her team to a second consecutive title victory in the National Netball League’s championship in Stellenbosch on Saturday. The Western Cape’s Tornados beat Gauteng’s Thunderbirds at the DF Malan Centre in Stellenbosch on Saturday afternoon, in a thrilling finale to the season’s National Netball League.

Speaking to gsport after their 37-36 win to defend their 2006 title, team captain Christine Markgraaff said “Oh, that’s awesome, it was really a very tough match, we were even right up to the end.

“Fortunately for us, we had the ball in hand at the end, and we could convert the last goal,” continued Markgraaff. “But it’s just an overwhelming feeling, because there was so much pressure, and so tight, and we’re very relieved and chuffed (laughs).”

Leading 21-20 late in the second quarter of Saturday’s final against the Thunderbirds, the Tornados managed to force a win despite the absence of Proteas defender Julene Meyer, who was injured in a car accident late May, for which she required surgery.

The Tornados secured a narrow 44-43 semi-final victory on Friday against a determined Comets team from the Eastern Cape, who comfortably beat Free State Cheetas to finish third in the tournament.
