Mamelodi Sundowns continued with their unbeaten run in the ongoing SAFA Women’s National League when they overcome a determined Tsunami Queens 2-1 in an absorbing game at Tsakane Stadium on Sunday, 29 September 2019.
In other matches, TUT beat Richmond Ladies from Northern Cape 2-0, while UJ recorded their first ever victory by overcoming Golden Ladies from North West 1-0 in the opening game of the day.
But the drawcard of the day was the match between pacesetters Sundowns and Qwa-Qwa based Tsunami Queens whereby the former were given a good run worth their money.
The Pretoria side have a 100 percent record in the league having collected maximum points from their five matches, but Queens almost stole a point in a gruelling match on Sunday.
Downs took the lead in the very first minute but could not add any more goals in the opening stanza. Queens came back in the second half with guns blazing and got the equaliser midway through the second half.
They then bossed the match and threatened to take the lead but were undone by Downs’ experience and big match temperament. The log leaders scored what proved the decisive goal in the dying minutes of the match when most fans had resigned to a 1-1 draw.
Victory means Sundowns are the only side with maximum points in their opening five games and from Sunday’s showing, will take some stopping.
