Week 12 of the Hollywoodbets Super League saw University of Johannesburg temporarily sit at the summit of the league standings on Saturday, following their 3-0 drubbing of TUT Matsatsantsa Football Club, notching up another victory away from home.
The Christinah Kutumela-led side lost another Varsity Derby after last week’s humbling defeat by University of Western Cape.
They will be hoping to avenge the two consecutive losses when they host TS Galaxy Queens in the following week. Meanwhile, The Rockets and University of Pretoria played to a goalless draw.
The Orange Army’s stay at the top lasted for only a few hours as the defending champions, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, secured a comprehensive 6-0 triumph over First Touch Ladies to further cement their place atop the log standings.
It is noteworthy though that UJ still remain tied with Banyana Ba Styla on 28 points, though Sundowns do have a game in hand. Nthabeleng Modiko’s side have an “easier” assignment next week as they travel to bottom-of-the-log side Thunderbirds Ladies who are yet to register a win in this season’s Super League.
UWC FC were lethal once again with Philisa Mjambane scoring a hat-trick, a brace by Sibulele “Msawawa” Holweni and a goal apiece for Khanya Xesi and Noxolo Cesane to end the match with a 7-0 comprehensive victory against Thunderbirds FC.
Courtesy of a 2-1 win over Durban Ladies, Richmond United move up to 6th on the standings while promoted University of Fort Hare leapfrog into the top 10 after they defeated fellow newcomers Lindelani Ladies 2-1.
Afrika Gxumisa was crowned Player of the Match as she scored and was influential in the home clash, in front of a full house indicating the level of growth the HBSL has seen since its inception.
Lindelani, meanwhile stay at 15th, at the bottom of the log with just 4 points after 11 games played, dangerously flirting with relegation.
JWW FC were held to a 1-1 draw by City Lads, that sees them drop a place down to 7th. New Brighton’s City Lads are 13th after 3 wins, 3 draw and 6 losses.
Royal AM Ladies jumped to 8th from 11th after cruising past Copperbelt Ladies, securing a 2-0 win as they remain unbeaten in eight consecutive encounters.
