The 2024 Varsity Netball competition got off to an exhilarating start when reigning champions UP-Tuks beat TUT in a landslide 95-9 victory to own the Tshwane derby in the prime time televised slot at the Wits Sports Hall in Johannesburg, Gauteng, on Sunday, 1 September 2024.
Tuks were already running away with the game by the end of Q1, and their dominance continued towards the 55-7 halftime score. Going on to starve TUT of any opportunity to get into the match, the champions ran away with sensational victory that will be a bitter pill for their Pretoria compatriots to swallow.
The 2024 season’s action started earlier in the day when the hotly-contested Wits Netball versus UFS Kovsies Netball fixture saw the ambitious hosts conceded a 78-33 defeat to the visitors, the Free State team dominating the match while their opponents struggled to settle their nerves in the opening encounter.
At the halftime mark, Kovsies had a healthy 43-14 lead before Wits put a brake on their progress, putting on a valiant defensive and attacking effort in the third quarter but the damage was done, and the well-oiled Free State outfit finished the tie with a well-deserved victory.
The second match of the day saw UJ Netball take on Maties Netball and this match was a much tighter affair than the first game of the day. It was the UJ who took the win 46-38, which was a very close contest between the two sides.
At the end of the first quarter, it was only one goal that separated UJ and Maties with things ending 10-11, and by half-time, the match was still a close one as the home team managed to hold to a slender 24-21 lead. It was in the fourth quarter that UJ really started to take hold of the game and eventually sealed an important first win.
The final match of the saw NWU Netball take on Madibaz Netball and the team from the North West ran away with the 85-49 victory on Sunday night.
NWU were able to command the match from the get-go which saw them take a 43-23 lead into halftime and they didn’t take their foot off the gas as they stayed in front heading in Q4 as the score was 66-33, going on to ensure a winning start in the competition.
