Varsity Netball Round 5: Tuks set sights on Semi Firing 70 past UJ

A lightning fast start by Tuks at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre saw them rout UJ 70-32 and continue their climb up the Varsity Netball log on Sunday.

Tuks were in a dominant mood from the first whistle in Stellenbosch and scored 10 successive goals before UJ could open their account.

Between Akosua Mensah defending like a trojan and the duo of Rumani Potgieter and Chantelle Swart combining with deadly effect, the Tuks machine quickly stamped their mark on proceedings. After the first quarter the Pretoria girls led 16-6 and then in the second quarter they used the powerplay to devastating effect, going into a 37-14 halftime lead.

After the break the mission was to quickly secure the bonus point for scoring 50 goals, which they did when Venetia Grobler scored after a good pass from the flying winger Tshinakaho Mdau.

While UJ tried their best, the pace, power and depth of Tuks meant that the score line of 55-23 after the third quarter was a fair reflection of the game. The fact that Tuks were an average of four centimetres taller also meant that UJ, who only had one player taller than 180cm, could not keep up with a squad featuring four players taller than 180cm.

The final quarter was a bit of a turgid affair, with the only highlight being the second power play, which saw Tuks score four times to a solitary goal by UJ. Tuks emptied their bench while UJ emptied their heart, and unfortunately for both teams the quality of the game suffered slightly. The final whistle saw Tuks record an impressive victory and know that they are back to their championship winning best.

Tuks now face the struggling VUT on Monday and will look for another high scoring affair as they continue to show why they have no intention of surrendering their Varsity Netball title. UJ will aim for a victory when they face UWC, but know that the passionate UWC supporters will be in full voice at the Coetzenburg Indoor Centre on Monday.
