The 2023 Vitality Netball World Cup trophy has made its way to Gauteng, after a successful trip around the province of KwaZulu-Natal from 25-29 May.
Last week Thursday, Netball South Africa President Cecilia Molokwane landed at King Shaka International Airport in Durban to a buzzing crowd as she brought home the #NWC2023 trophy before the global tournament gets underway from the 28th of July at Cape Town International Convention Centre.
With South Africa being the first African country to host the tournament, it was significant that the trophy arrived on Africa Day.
Speaking on Durban’s reception of the trophy tour, KZN Project Manager, Lona Benya said: “The turnout has been amazing, firstly the project team came up with different themes for the areas that were visited in the form of coaching clinics, netball tournaments, motorcades, traditional festivals.”
The KZN team in charge of the trophy tour had to ensure that the trophy reached every corner of the province.
“We needed to cluster the 11 districts we have in the province, the travelling was also a key element because every KZN citizen wanted the trophy, the turn outs were massive,” Benya added.
Lona continued to explain the importance of the trophy tour ahead of the global showpiece, “The fact that the Netball World Cup is in Cape Town and not every South African citizen will make it, this trophy tour bridges that gap in the different provinces, it is very important that people embrace it as it is a historical thing that a trophy travels so much, first on African soil after 60 years.
“As KZN, the trophy tour is a second leg of taking the Netball World Cup to the people. We started with the activations when we visited the different districts the people came out in numbers and supported the activations and they came in numbers supporting the trophy tour,” Benya concluded.
On Tuesday, 30 May, the trophy headed to Gauteng to parts of the Vaal such as Sedibeng, Sicelo Stadium and Saul Tsotestsi Sport Complex in Sebokeng Zone 14.
We have arrived at our last and final stop of the day at Saul Tsotetsi Sport Centre in Zone 14 Sebokeng where the community cheered and danced to welcome the trophy. Part of the day’s activities include netball games from local teams and performances.#NWC2023 pic.twitter.com/Dv4zPzINTJ
