South African Judo champion, Michaela Whitebooi, won gold at the Cameroon African Open on Saturday, 7 November 2020, gaining vital points on her quest to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics.

She confirmed to gsport after her victory, saying: “I competed in the Cameroon Open and I received the gold medal.

“This is a vital competition to gain points and get me closer to my qualification.

“I will compete again next Saturday (14 November) in the Senegal African Open,” she concluded.

In a previous interview with gsport, she expressed her desire to represent her country at the prestigious event after the tournament was cancelled this year due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The Port Elizabeth-born Whitebooi has an incredible list of achievements globally as she has put the sport of judo on the map and is aiming to continue rising her star.
