Willeit Claims Fifth Cape Town Cycle Tour Title

Multiple South African champion Cherise Willeit won her fifth Cape Town Cycle Tour title in Cape Town on Sunday, 8 March 2020.

Willeit celebrated International Women’s Day by crossing the finish line in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 48 seconds.

Speaking to the media after her victory, Willeit confirmed that she had struggled after suffering a stomach issue earlier in the week and did not have the best build-up going into the race.

“It feels amazing! I really came into this race probably the most unknown that I’ve ever gone into a race. I had quite an interesting week dealing with a stomach bug,” Willeit said in a video posted by Cape Town Cycle Tour’s Twitter page.

“My legs were cramping at the end but like with every cycle it is a special one.”

Willeit has won the second most titles among the women at the Cape Town Cycle Tour. Anriette Schoeman has won the event seven times and finished in the chasing bunch.
