
Defending Champions Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof started their defence of the 10th Amanda Coetzer Challenge in Bloemfontein on Thursday, flawlessly beating Cradock High School of the Eastern Cape 21-0 in round 1 of the three-day challenge.
Bloemhof, who have won the title for the past six years were impressive on court winning their six singles matches and three doubles matches without dropping a set.
Former world doubles champion, Pietie Norval, coach of the Bloemhof side said that he was pleased with his team’s performance. “We could not have wished for a better start to what always ends up being a tough weekend’s tennis.
"However, despite the good start, my team need to remain focused and committed to defending their title if they want a chance to lift the trophy on Saturday” said Norval.
Hosts a runners up in last year’s tournament, Oranje had a tough opening encounter against Hoërskool Stellenbosch eventually winning 15-11.
In the last tie of the opening round, the two Pretoria “tennis giants” Hoërskool Menlopark and three time winner Hoërskool Waterkloof did battle with Menlopark upsetting Waterkloof 14-8.
On Friday rounds 2 and 3 of the round robin competition will be played with the final rounds scheduled for Saturday.
