With a tally of eleven medals for Team South Africa on Wednesday, South Africa is proving to be a significant player in the ninth edition of the All Africa Games in Algiers.
Team SA is officially second in the medals tally behind hosts Algeria, with 101 overall medals against 124, with Tunisia the closest competitor in the chase on 98 medals.
But the interesting fact is that, among the women’s teams, South Africa is in the overall lead, with 47 medals against Tunisia’s 41 and Algeria’s 38, though Algeria leads with the most number in 20 Gold medals, with South Africa, Tunisia and Egypt each boasting 13.
Melissa Corfe lead the South African women in the pool on Wednesday, when she placed first ahead of compatriot Kathryn Meaklim in the 400m Freestyle to claim Gold, and Jessica Pengelly adding another Silver to Meaklim’s in the 200m Individual Medley.
In tennis, Lizaan du Plessis, Kelly Anderson and Banki Makgagala lost 2-0 in the final to Algeria, and took Silver, while Banyana Banyana beat Ghana 2-0 to progress to Sunday’s final against Nigeria.
“Well, a tremendous win for us,” Banyana Banyana’s Fran Hilton-Smith told gsport on Thursday, “It’s a really good victory, it’s the first time we’ve beaten Ghana since victory in 2000, so it shows we’re on the right track.”
South Africa’s women volleyball Team lost 0-3 against Algeria, and South Africa’s Women’s Team Kumite Karate event lost to the Democratic Repubic of Congo.
