Nairobi Showdown for Olympics

Only a surprise upset by Kenya stands in the way of the SPAR SA Women’s hockey team continental bragging rights, as they prepare for their final push for a place at next year’s Olympic Games in Beijing.

South Africa’s dominance is seen in their unbeaten five matches on route to the six-nations tournament final in Nairobi, in which no less than seven goals scored were against opposition each match, and without conceding one goal in the tournament.

Having played an overwhelming game against hosts and co-finalists Kenya on Friday, coach Jenny King will be looking forward to a quick and ruthless victory on Sunday.

She will already be casting a calculating eye forwards to the upcoming four-nations Olympic warm-up tournament in Beijing, which involving hosts China, Argentina and Australia, will be a better measure of what remains to be done before the 2008 global show-down.
