Women’s Sport Celebrates Commercial Advances in 2023

On Friday, 22 September 2023, prominent figures in South African sport will gather at the esteemed Johannesburg Stock Exchange for the second annual gsport Business Breakfast.

The event aims to bolster the commercialisation of women’s sport and address the critical challenge faced by female athletes: the imperative to transition into full-time professionalism, thus enabling sport to become a viable career.

The choice of this prestigious venue underscores the urgency of investing in women’s sport, marking a significant step towards a future where female athletes have the opportunity to thrive and excel on a professional level.

The gsport Business Breakfast is a pivotal outcome of the #gsportHenley Commercial Stairway, a practical platform that encourages action learning. Through this initiative, gsport has not only made substantial strides in advancing women’s sports but also reported on the progress made by others dedicated to propelling women’s sports forward.

Voices Leading the Charge

This year’s event will be hosted by popular SABC Sport broadcaster, Lonwabo Nkohla, lending her expertise and extensive coverage of women’s sport as a valued contributor to the gsport newsroom.

“We called it early here at gsport, 2023 is the year of women’s sport, meaning if there was a year to be advancing and levelling up, it is this one. I’m extremely excited to be tasked with handling such a momentous conversation. I look forward to driving and facilitate this conversation that has taken centre stage following a successful showing by our women in sport. From the Proteas Women, to Banyana Banyana, to individual athletes like Kgothatso Montjane,”revealed an ecstatic Nkohla.

“gsport has given me so many opportunities, so many career highlights and moments of growth. I’ve been taken out of my comfort zone more times than I can remember and that has helped me see immense growth in my career. From being Sub-Editor and Voice of God at #gsport16, to this now, hosting the gsport Business Breakfast. As a person that boxed themselves as just an anchor, I can proudly add Voice Over Artist, TV Presenter and MC to my CV and it’s thanks to gsport and their dedication to #OpenUpTheIndustry.”

Esteemed Leading Woman in PR and Sponsorship, Emy Casaletti-Bwalya, will take centre stage as the keynote speaker. Her presentation, titled “How Positivity Won Two Grand Slams in The Year of Women’s Sport,” promises to inspire and inform attendees about the power of positive change in the sports industry.

Additionally, the event will also feature a panel discussion with leading athletes, delving into how we can further build upon the advances made in professionalizing women’s sport.

Wheelchair tennis sensation and two-time Grand Slam title winner, Kgothatso Montjane, will be in attendance to share her journey to success.

Speaking on her inclusion, Montjane shared an emotional message and thanked gsport for playing a role in her career over the years.

“Thank you for believing in me, you saw so much that I also didn’t see. I thank you so much, no amount of words could show gratitude. I am really grateful, I think about it now and then, that actually, I was never all alone, I really had people like you who really supported me.”
