Netball South Africa (NSA) has announced the SPAR National Netball Squad that will represent the country at the New World Netball World Championships to be played in Auckland, New Zealand from 10 – 17 November 2007.
The Squad consists of fifteen players with Burta de Kock being re-confirmed as the national coach and Hazel Gumede as her assistant.
De Kock and Gumede were appointed coach and assistant coach to the national team in February this year.
The team will be captained by Bronwyn Bock-Jonathan, and also includes veteran Sindisiwe Gumede, and young guns, Tsakane Mbewe and Refiloe Mochaka.
Cecilia Molokwane, Netball South Africa’s Director of Selectors, said she was confident that the squad, will represent the country proudly in New Zealand.
“The trials that we held this past weekend at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria were a real test to all the players and after these challenging two days I believe the selectors have put together a squad capable of holding their own against the best in the world.”
As part of their final preparations before the World Championships, the squad will play a three-test series against Uganda in September. The squad will then be reduced to 12 players with the 3 remaining players becoming non-traveling reserves.
South Africa are presently ranked 5th on the world netball rankings behind New Zealand, Australia, England and Jamaica.
