The South African Surfing Team which will compete in the 2024 International Surfing Association World Surfing Games at Margara, Arecibo in Puerto Rico from 23 February to 3 March, 2024, has been announced by the Board of Directors of Surfing South Africa.
The 2024 ISA World Games is of great significance as it is the final opportunity for surfers to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Games.
Included in the South African Team of three Men and three Women are Sarah Baum (Durban North, 2023 SA Team member Danielle Powis (Cape Town) and new cap Natasha van Greunen (Cape Town) team. Olympic Coach Christopher Bond and SSA Operations Manager Reza De Nicker are the Team Management.
Baum qualified for the Paris Olympics at the 2023 ISA World Games, and there is still a chance for either Danielle Powis or Natasha Van Greunen to join Baum as the second female surfer, to compete in the Olympics, in Tahiti this July.
KZN Local but Australian-based Sarah Baum first represented South Africa as a 14 year-old at the ISA World Junior Championships in France, and is a top-ranked campaigner on the World Surf League.
Danielle Powis won the annual Victoria Bay Quadrangular Surf contest two years ago, and is a former SA Champion. Van Greunen qualified for inclusion in the South African Team based on her ranking on the WSL.
“We are super excited with the caliber of this team” said Surfing South Africa President, Isaac February.
“Each individual brings so much maturity and a complete understanding of what it takes to win at this level. This makes it very easy to expect success at the 2024 ISA World Games, a 2024 Olympic Qualifying event. I have no doubt the team will make South Africa proud,” said February.
In addition to final Olympic Qualification, the ISA World Surfing Games also determines the World Women’s Individual Champions, and overall Team Champions.
