SA’s track and field stars have a final to achieve the IAAF
qualifiers for the Beijing Olympic Games, when they compete at the Yellow Pages
National Senior Championships in Stellenbosch on 14-15 March.
The best achievement in the sprints so far this year has
come from Athletics Gauteng North (AGN) Geraldine Pillay who, at the Yellow
pages Meet in Germiston, clocked 11.35 seconds (an Olympic B standard
qualifier), in the women’s 100 meters.
Athletes are expected to achieve the A standard qualifiers
of 11.32 and 23.00 seconds in the 100m and 200m to be considered. "I skipped
the Yellow Pages Series in Oudtshoorn and Tshwane as a precaution," said
Pillay.
"With the medical attention I have received over the past
three weeks, I am positive about running an Olympic qualifier in Stellenbosch.
Besides, I will be competing in front of my home crowd."
In Stellenbosch Pillay will be defending her national 100m
and 200m titles, where she will be posed a serious domestic challenge for the
first time in four years in the form of Tsholofelo Thipe (North West North), Isabel
le Roux (Athletics Gauteng North) and the Africa
double Junior Champion Constance Mkenku (Athletics Free State).
