Pam Golding International Champion, South Africa’s Stacy Bregman is in a chase for the Ladies African Tour Order of Merit Award with England’s Rebecca Hudson and Denmark’s Julie Tvede.
21-year old Stacy Bregman is at the forefront of an international battle for supremacy of the 2008 Order of Merit, which continues at this week’s final Ladies African Tour (LAT) event at the Telkom Women’s Classic, which tees off at Zwartkop Country Club on Wednesday.
Ninety players from seventeen countries will take to the fairways in the chase for a slice of the R350,000 tournament prize fund, but all eyes will be on the current top three players on the 2008 LAT Order of Merit, who are in the strongest position to take the honours this year.
Each of these players has won an event on this year’s tour, with England’s Rebecca Hudson winning the tour-opening WPGA Masters, Dane Julie Tvede who lifted the Acer Women’s SA Open trophy in Durban, and local Stacy Bregman who claimed last week’s title at the Pam Golding Ladies International.
It was this same trio who finished in the top three positions on the 2007 Order of Merit, with Bregman also finishing as joint runner-up alongside Hudson at the 2007 Telkom Women’s Classic, which was played on the Benoni Lake Club course.
But the contenders will be aware of the need to focus on their individual game plans, having been drawn in the same match at 09h30 for tomorrow’s first round of the Telkom Women’s Classic, and the course conditions and layout at Zwartkop are ideal for the tough competition ahead.
Unlike last week’s Nelspruit’s Golf course, which played long, this week the golfers will need to hit it straight and keep on the fairways, as the regular rain in the last couple of weeks has left the bunkers a little wet, and playing heavy.
After the last couple of day’s practice rounds, the players are however notably impressed with the greens, which are holding well. For the duration of this week’s 54-hole competition, the players will enjoy morning field starts, which invites the added caution of the early morning dew, which has a slight advantage for the long hitters.
The Telkom Women’s Classic tees off at 07h00 on Wednesday morning, and entrance is free.
