South Africa is the talk of the town in Edmonton, Canada, after beating Germany 2-1 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Team Squash Championships.
SA’s campaign started on Monday night with a surprise 2-1 win over fellow Pool D contenders, Australia, before going down 3-0 to the powerful Netherlands yesterday.
Last night’s win over Germany secured second place for South Africa, in Pool D, while defending champions, Australia lost out on a place in the last eight after a humiliating 3-il loss to a powerful Netherlands.
Needing to win against 4th-ranked Netherlands to secure a quarterfinals berth, Australia sunk to a humiliating 3-0 drubbing at the hands of the Dutch ladies.
Aussie coach Michelle Martin was despondent after the result: “This is a very disappointing position for Australia to be in after so many years of being at the top.”
The top four seeds England, Egypt, Malaysia and the Netherlands secured a chance at the now vacant championship title in the second round of the pool stages at the tournament.
SA will face either England or Egypt on Thursday in their quarter finals after a rest day today, and the team will be hoping that the injury to team captain Claire Nitch is not too serious.
