SA beat Kazakhstan to win Hong Kong 7s Plate Competition

IRB Womens Sevens World Series logoThe SA squad did themselves proud by winning the the IRB Hong Kong Women’s Sevens tournament’s Plate competition with wins over Kazakhstan and France, after finishing runners-up to France in Group C.

SA started their Hong Kong series well with a 19-14 win against the formidable Irish team, to finish second in their group behind France. France beat the lady Blitzbokke 24-7 in their final group-stage fixture, after also beating Ireland 19-7 for Group C honours.

Taking the lessons of their group-stage defeat to France to heart, the South Africans finished the tournament in style, first accounting for Japan 26-5 in the Hong Kong Plate semi-finals, before repeating the score against the always competitive Kazakhstan, to lift they Plate trophy as just rewards for a hard-fought campaign.

South Africa’s group-stage winners France joined Australia, Canada and the Netherlands as 2013 Hong Kong Women’s Sevens Cup title contenders, where they were knocked out of the chase by a formidable Canadian team, who had accumulated the tour high of 87 points in their group stage.

In the second semi-final Australia put paid to the Netherlands, beating the European side 17-5 to contest the final against Canada.

Canada were ultimately crowned deserved winners of the tournament, running through 29-0 winners over Australia to win the Cup title without having a single point scored against them in the tournament.
