A Goal Fest in Malawi Propels UWC Through to CAF Women’s Champions League Cosafa Qualifiers Final

The University of Western Cape (UWC) is one step closer to joining Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies in the CAF Women’s Champions League as they secured a thrilling 6-0 victory against Young Buffaloes in Blantyre, Malawi, on Thursday 22, August 2024. 

The result sees them book their place in the finals of the CAF Women’s Champions League Cosafa Qualifiers, against Gaborone United on Saturday. 

The team from the Western Cape didn’t give their opponents a chance to settle as they got on the score sheet as early as the 9th minute after Buffaloes goalkeeper Gcinile Dlamini committed a foul in the box and UWC was awarded a penalty, which Nondumiso Manengela calmly slotted. 

It was Bongeka Gamede who doubled the lead for her team in the 26th minute as she connected with a free kick to head the ball into the back of the net and make it 2-0 going into halftime. 

When the match resumed the South African team continued to dominate proceeding and keep creating chances for a third goal. It finally came via substitute Ntombifikile Ndlovu who made the most of a fumble by Buffaloes shot-stopper Dlamini to add another goal to their tally. Tiffany Kortjie then made it 4-0 as her experience showed with her well-executed finish in the 74th minute.

With less than 20 minutes to go, UWC was not resting on their laurels and again made the most of some below-par goalkeeping from Dlamini as Koketso Mamabolo put the ball into the back of the net. Thinasonke Mbuli’s team was then handed the second penalty of the game and Sibulele Holweni sealed the emphatic win. 

A few big milestones were reached in the match as UWC shot up the ranks, becoming one of the best teams in the tournament with forward Gamede among the top goalscorers, having netted three goals. Thursday’s match was also recorded the score most goals were scored in a match, and the win was by the biggest margin. 

UWC will take on Gaborone United in the final on Saturday, 24 August at 14h00 CAT. 

United got the better of Herentals Queens 1-0 in the other semi-final, via a late strike from winger Yaone Modise.
