Jo-Ann van Dyk threw a Games record distance in the women’s javelin to add another gold medal to Team SA’s tally at the African Games in Accra, Ghana on Wednesday, 20 March, 2024.
Van Dyk launched the javelin 60.80m, with teammate Jana van Schalkwyk claiming silver with a throw of 57.64m.
On Tuesday it was Miré Reinstorf with another Games Record, claiming the gold medal with a winning height of 4.35m in the Women’s pole vault final.
The combined Team South African campaign had started the day with 96 medals, and athletics had three of them, all gold, and that total has now stretched to 98 medals.
Egypt continues to lead the medals hauls, their national effort having brought in a total of 165 medals by Wednesday, with a huge contingent of 92 gold medals included.
South African has outpaced Algeria’s chase with a firm hand on the continental leaderboard’s third place position, but Nigeria – though with a lesses total medals count – continues to hold SA at bay in second place.
