Egypt continue to soar at the 13th African Games, they have led the medals table for majority of this year’s competition, and currently comfortably in first position with 128 medals, while South Africa is listed in fourth position on the official leaderboard, with a total of 80.
Nigeria, with the least number of medals of the chasing pack also including SA and Algeria, has slipped up to second place on the leaderboard on the gold medal count, their most recent gain courtesy Mary Osijo’s winning the 87kg Clean-Jerk division in weightlifting on Thursday to clear the country’s way to a slim second position.

Algeria and South Africa are tied on team totals of 22 gold medals each, but Algeria is listed above SA by virtue of their greater total medals count of 86 against South Africa’s 80 medals officially listed.
Team SA has South Africa’s medal count at a total of 81 medals, comprised of 22 gold, 25 silver and 34 bronze. Swimming has been the major contributor, responsible for 46 medals, more than SA won at Morocco in 2019.
Thursday was a quieter day for Team SA in terms of codes and competitors in action at the 13th African Games, the women’s team of Hayley Preen, Sonica Klopper, Anika Visser and Lucy Young surging to the silver medal behind Eritrea in the 37.5km Women’s Time-Trial Under-23 Elite event.
The Individual Women Elite/U23 Time Trial is scheduled for Friday and Team SA will be hoping for more medals in Accra on Friday.
