Karabo Meso, the 16-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Rockville, Soweto, has earned her maiden call-up to the Proteas Women’s T20 International (T20I) squad for the series against Sri Lanka, joining returning players Annerie Dercksen and Tumi Sekhukhune.
Their inclusion follows the absence of injured players Ayanda Hlubi, Mieke de Ridder, and Delmi Tucker. The T20I series serves as an opportunity for fringe players to stake their claim for future selections and build depth ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Speaking about Meso’s inclusion, Proteas Women Head Coach, Hilton Moreeng, remarked, “It’s a youngster who’s got a lot of potential and one we’re looking to see how she goes when given the opportunity.”
Convenor of Selectors, Clinton du Preez, stated, “The selection panel has looked at the Sri Lanka T20I series to give some fringe players an opportunity towards the World Cup and there are one or two positions that we are looking at to ensure that we have sufficient depth.”
Meso’s call-up follows her outstanding performance at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, where she earned a spot in the Team of the Tournament. Speaking about her love for the game.
Meso recalls, “I went to watch her play at Elkah stadium, that’s when I began to love the game – I was 7 years old then.”
Reflecting on her journey, Meso credits her teammates for their unwavering support and highlights the invaluable lessons learned during the U19 World Cup.
Beyond cricket, Meso aspires to represent the Momentum Proteas and pursue a career in gynecology, drawing inspiration from role models like Trisha Chetty and Sarah Taylor.
Her standout performance at the U19 World Cup also earned her selection for Team SA at the Women’s T20 competition at the 13th African Games, where South Africa claimed silver.
