20240726 Football Paris2024 Malawi and Nigeria Lose Opening Ties USAWNT

The Zambian women’s football team faces an uphill battle at the Olympic Games in Paris after losing their opening encounter 3-0 to the United States of America, while Nigeria went down 1-nil to Brazil in their first tie, on Thursday, 25 July, 2024.

It was a bright night for the USWNT as they dominated the match from start to finish.

For Zambia, there is little time to reflect on the loss as they are set to face the Matildas of Australia on 28 July, and Germany on 31 July, both tough encounters, to conclude their group stage.

For the second time after 2020, the Zambia women’s football team qualified for the Olympics by winning the fourth-round play-off of the 2024 CAF Women’s Olympic qualifying tournament against Morocco.

Elsewhere in Group B action, Germany scored an emphatic 3-0 win over Australia.

Nigeria, the other team to qualify from Africa alongside Zambia, lost 1-0 to Brazil in Group C action, while Spain beat Japan 2-1. Nigeria will face Spain on 28 July and Japan on 31 July in their other group games.

In Group A action, Tokyo champions Canada beat New Zealand 2-1, and France edged out Colombia 3-2.

Tokyo victors Canada are the defending champions, and the tournament features group stage games, quarterfinals, semifinals, a bronze medal match, before the final to crown the Paris 2024 champions.

This is the eighth edition of the women’s Olympic football tournament. The 2024 Summer Olympics football tournament is being held at seven stadiums in seven cities across France, with the final set to be held at Parc des Princes in Paris.
