The competitors in the fiercely contested Pro Junior (20 and under) division of the Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series have been given a major bonus with the announcement that the top six in the final series ratings will be given the opportunity to earn a coveted invitation to the ASP World Junior Championships.
The four event, R110 000 GGOT series, which celebrates the beach lifestyle, reaches its conclusion in Scottburgh this weekend where the 2007/8 series champions will be crowned after events in Margate and Jeffreys Bay in December and in Cape Town earlier this month.
The top six U20 girls, determined by their results in all four events, will be invited to compete in a surf-off at the Billabong Pro Junior International event run at The Point in Jeffreys Bay in September.
They will be joined by two wildcards selected by the sponsors in a one-on-one format that will see the winner not only take home the prized invitation to the annual Billabong ASP World Junior Championships in Sydney, Australia, but also have their airfare to the event paid by First National Bank (FNB).
The GGOT Pro Junior ratings are currently headed by Kommetjie standout Tarryn Chudleigh, winner of the J-Bay and Cape Town legs of the 2007/8 series. Chantelle Rautenbach (Melkbosstrand) is second followed by Heidi Palmboom (Bluff), Lisa Mace (Kommetjie), Grace Rheeders (Durban) and Morag Steele.
Sarah Baum (Athlone Park), who missed the J-Bay event and is ranked seventh, will be going all out at Scottburgh to secure a place in the top six along with the likes of Laurie McGregor (East London), Bronwyn Chudleigh (Kom) and Kirsty Delport (Durban).
The Billabong ‘Girls Get Out There’ Summer Surf Series event at Scottburgh runs from 8am to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. The event features the country’s top female surfers in a 4A rated, R20 000 Open contest, a 3A rated, R10 000 Pro Junior, and U15 and Novices events.
