2020 Momentum gsport Awards Public Choice winner and star squash player, Awande Malinga, is grateful to be back playing after partially tearing her ACL 5 months ago.

According to a post shared by Malinga on Facebook, she expressed her delight as she revealed that her road to recovery was not an easy journey, especially watching the sport that she loves from the sidelines.

“I was manifesting a good year with many tournaments but obviously that was turned down,” revealed Malinga.

“I could tell you, devastated wasn’t even the word to describe how I was feeling, as I had realised the outcomes of me not playing those tournaments I had hoped for.

“Every tournament was hard to watch. But later down the line I had to accept my setback and to work harder on my come back,” she added.

“I’m still going strong and throughout this journey I have learnt that there will be hard acceptance days, okay days and days where I felt awful both mentally and physically.

The days where I felt awful were the days I had to push through and work 10x harder.”

Malinga says her time away gave her the opportunity to see the game from a different view: “My time away has taught me to read the game from a different perspective, one that I am more excited to implement in every tournament I play.

“I know I have few exciting months ahead such as Women’s World Junior Individual Squash Championships in France, SA Championships & SA Schools Squash Inter Provincial Tournament in Cape Town, SA Top Schools in East London, etc… with this comes challenges of travelling (sponsorship assistance to take part in these tournaments, especially trip to France will be appreciated a lot),” she continued.

“I know my hard work has partially paid off as I am the U19 2022 Northerns Junior Squash Association Girls Champion. I still have a lot to prove to myself and I can’t wait to do so.

“No one said coming back would be easy but I’m glad to say I am,” she concluded.
