South Africa’s squash sensation, Awande Malinga, has embarked on an exciting journey as she settles into life in the United States on a university sports scholarship with Drexel University in Philadelphia, where she will study for a Sports Business degree and play for the Drexel Dragons Squash team. 

This opportunity marks a significant milestone in her blossoming career, providing her with the chance to elevate her game, experience a new culture, and further her education. For Malinga, the experience so far has been nothing short of incredible.

The fast-paced nature of life in the U.S is something she is embracing with open arms, soaking in every moment while balancing the demands of being a student-athlete. Despite the inevitable challenges of adjusting to a new lifestyle, Malinga is thriving both on and off the court.

Squash-wise, Malinga has already made a mark with the Drexel Dragons. “The team is very supportive, and I’m learning a lot from everyone,” she says. The training sessions have been intense, as the squad prepares for upcoming tournaments. The sense of camaraderie and the privilege of being part of such a dynamic group have been highlights for her. Fans can expect even more thrilling updates as she continues to build on her success.

Like any major life transition, Malinga has faced challenges. “The biggest challenge has been balancing everything from academics, training, and just adjusting to the lifestyle here,” she admits. Finding her rhythm in this new chapter of her life has been a learning curve, but one she is handling with grace and determination.

“Home-cooked meals and the comfort of being around family is some of the things I miss the most,” she reveals. Despite the distance, Malinga’s heart remains connected to home, finding solace in the memories of her loved ones.
