Banyana Banyana made easy work of their final group match at the COSAFA Women’s Championship, the hosts running out 8-1 winners against the Seychelles at the Madibaz Stadium in Gqeberha, on Monday, 28 October 2024.
South Africa found themselves on the scoreboard in the 11th minute as Kesha Hendricks’s effort hit the bar but then fell into the net, much to the delight of her team.
The two sides had to contend with blustery and rainy conditions at the venue, with the Eastern Cape hit by inclement weather including heavy rains in recent days. Banyana let some complacency creep in, allowing the Seychelles two chances, but they were not able to convert.

Nthando Phala then doubled South Africa’s lead as she completed a stunning strike that sailed over the head of the Seychelles goalkeeper Kurchia Poris into the back of the net.
Seconds later Hendricks was in the action again as she picked up on a loose ball and made no mistake in netting her brace, for South Africa’s third goal. The home team added two more goals before the half was over via Tshegofatso Motlogelwa and Sinamile Mkhwanazi, to take a 5-0 advantage into halftime.

Ten minutes after the game resumed it was none other than Hendricks who sealed her hat-trick with a fine tap-in for Banyana Banyana’s sixth goal. Ayesha Moosa picked up on a cross to add her name to the scoresheet and, at this stage, it was one-way traffic from Banyana.
Mkhwanazi then got on the end of a great set-piece to find back of the net for South Africa’s eighth goal, and her brace. Seychelles managed to score the final goal of the match in the 74th minute, when Seychelles captain Pascalina Moustache netted from a penalty.
South Africa went on to secure the emphatic win, and will now contest the semi-finals on Thursday, 31 October 2024 at 15h00. Seychelles conceded 21 goals in their three Group A matches.
