JVW Girls Football Club failed to take advantage of the postponed Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies game, missing a golden opportunity to go top of the Hollywoodbets Super League log on Saturday, 12 June 2021, after losing 2-1 to Bloemfontein Celtic Ladies.
It was a shock result but also goes to show how competitive the HSL is becoming.
JVW were odds favourites to travel to Bloemfontein and come back with maximum points but the home side had other ideas as they inflicted the high-flying Johannesburg side with their first defeat in the competition.
While Bloemfontein is proving a tricky destination, Durban Ladies travelled to De Aar where they beat the home side Richmond United 3-2 in a high-scoring encounter and their first win of the season.
University of the Western Cape kept their good run with a 3-0 victory over Tsunami Queens in Harrismith while Ma-Indies Ladies thrashed Golden Ladies 4-0 in Giyani. Eastern Cape’s Thunderbirds Ladies were held to a goalless draw by Coal City Wizards.
The clash of the varsities on Sunday, 13 June, saw Tshwane University of Technology steal three points from University of Johannesburg with a last gasp goal scored by Gabonnelwe Kekana in referee’s optional time.
