Botswana’s Boitshepiso Kelapile is the only female that will represent the country at the World U20 Junior Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Botswana Athletes Association is sending a 13-member team to participate in the tournament, which is scheduled to take place from 17-22 of August.
Nineteen-year-old Kelapile hopes her participation will inspire other girls to work hard and increase the number of female athletes in the country.
“I have been preparing for this day to come and being the only female in 13-member squad is still fine with me. But I hope that my participation at the junior championship will motivate other girls to work hard so that we can increase numbers of female athletes.”
She earned her qualification spot during the Botswana Youth Games in 2019 after she won a gold medal in the 100m event with a personal best of 11:85. During that same competition, she also won a gold medal in the 200m event.
Her impressive performance saw her being included in Team Botswana for the 2019 Confederation of Southern Africa Schools Sports Association (COSSASA) Games where she won silver in the 100m and bronze in the 200m events.
Early this year, ‘Pre’ – as she is affectionately known in the athletics circle – dominated the 100m and 200m events in the junior category in Botswana Athletics Association National Championships.
Asked about her objectives ahead of the junior championship Boitshepiso told gsport that she is hoping for a new personal best and also wants to enjoy her last year competing in the juniors section.
“My aim in this championship is to come with a PB personal best and also enjoy my last year competing in the junior category.”
