The official ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2023 Captains Media Day took place at Radisson Red, V&A Waterfront in Cape Town on Saturday, 4 February, where the 10 captains from the participating countries had the opportunity to grace the media.
The global showpiece, which will commence on Friday, 10 February at the iconic Newlands Cricket Ground, will see hosts South Africa take on Sri Lanka at 19h00 CAT.
Speaking at the event, Momentum Proteas captain, Sunè Luus highlighted the importance of hosting the world and its impact on future of cricket in South Africa.
“I think in South Africa we have come a long way in terms of being professional, but obviously still a lot of room for growth. I think just going back to grassroots level, our provincial set-ups – I think we are still far off from an Australia or New Zealand. But, I think a tournament like this can really help boost that.
“So, it’s awesome to have the World Cup in South Africa and the hopefully CSA and all the sponsors and partners can take this forward, especially when the tournament is done. And, we can inspire a lot of girls to pick up a bat and ball, and just grow women’s cricket in South Africa,” added Luus.
When asked about dealing with playing in front of the home crowd, Luus says: “It’s going to be amazing. I mean, the build-up has been so long and everywhere you go, I think more people are starting to realise women’s cricket in South Africa. Even last night, going out to dinner, people stopping us to say that they are going to be at the games and sharing their excitement – it’s just really exciting to be here in South Africa and the most important part is knowing that you get to inspire the whole nation.”
